Sunderland U23 2-2 Derby County U23: Late penalty earns Black Cats a draw

Tom Beadling’s late penalty forced a draw as Sunderland twice came from behind against Derby County in the Premier League 2. The Black Cats’ development side went into the game on the back of a two-game losing streak but avoided completing an unwanted hat-trick at the Stadium of Light. Goalkeeper Mika had a night to forget, after his errors led to both Derby goals – with Mason Bennett giving the Rams the lead just before the hour and then Kellan Gordon restoring the visitors’ lead after sub Dan Wright had levelled. Sunderland stay fifth in the table, with Derby still 11th. But a foul by Josh Lelan on sub Josh Maja allowed Beadling to earn his side a point. Development side coach Andy Welsh included first-teamers Mika, Donald Love , Gooch and Sweden Under-21 striker Joel Asoro in a strong line-up, with boss David Moyes watching from the stands. Rees Greenwood saw an early shot saved by Jonathan Mitchell, seconds after the Derby keeper had had to make a clearance as he was closed down by Lynden Gooch. And just before the quarter-hour, Kellan Gordon stung Mika’s hands with a powerful shot which the Portuguese stopper pushed round the post diving to his left. Ten minutes before the break, George Honeyman brought a good diving stop out of Mitchell with a left-footed effort from 25 yards. And a couple of minutes later Sunderland were inches away from taking the lead when Love crossed from the right and Ethan Robson looped a header onto the top of the crossbar and over. Sunderland began the second half strongly with Asoro firing into the sidenetting soon after the break, and then Mitchell made a fine save at the foot of his near post to deny Greenwood after he found space for a shot inside the area on the left. But Derby took the lead on 57 minutes with a bizarre goal, as a corner floated in from the left was met with a weak punch by Mika at the near post and the ball bounced off Bennett a couple of yards out and trickled over the line.
