Sunderland midfielder among the 30-man shortlist for the 2016 African Footballer of the Year award

Sunderland midfielder Wahbi Khazri has made the 30-man shortlist for the 2016 African Footballer of the year award. The Black Cats paid £10 million to prize the Tunisian international away from Bordeaux in the January transfer window, and alongside fellow January signings Lamine Kone and Jan Kirchhoff, he played an instrumental part in keeping the Wearsiders in the Premier League. The 25-year-old scored in vital wins over Manchester United and Chelsea at the Stadium of Light and also helped guide Tunisia to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon next January. Khazri has seemingly fell out of favour under David Moyes this season but that has not preventing him making the 30-man shortlist for the African Player of the year award. Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won the award in 2015, and he is nominated again, while Khazri is one of 12 Premier League stars up for the award. Leicester City’s PFA Player of the season Riyad Mahrez is a strong contender for the award, while Islam Slimani, Mohamed Elneny, Andre Ayew, Wictor Wanyama, John Obi Mikel, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa, Yannick Bolasie, and Sadio Mane complete the Premier League interest in the list of nominees. The winner will be announced in January once all of the managers and Sporting directors from the African Nations have cast their vote. 2016 African Footballer of the Year shortlist 1. Riyad Mahrez 2.
