Pepe, Fonte and Ronaldo celebrate win over Poland, June 2016 Portugal in semi-finals Portugal are in the Euro 2016 semi-finals despite not winning a match in 90 minutes. That’s quite a feat. A penalty shoot-out was required to edge past Poland. Ricardo Quaresma scored the winning spot-kick after Kuba Błaszczykowski had his effort saved. He’s never been what you would call reliable but he’s the hero once again. The Besiktas winger helped his country beat Croatia in the last round with a tap-in. He proved equally adept from 12 yards this time around. His cameo from the bench wasn’t particularly impressive but he did what was required. As did Cristiano Ronaldo. Many expected him to book the fifth penalty to get the glory. Instead he stepped up first to set the tone for the rest of his teammates. Disappointing Ronaldo Ronaldo had a disappointing game. He missed chances you would expect him to score. Point-blank range, Ronaldo territory. He has to step up to the plate in the semi-finals. Renato Sanches could teach him a thing or two about taking a game by the scruff of the neck. The midfielder marked his first Euro start by becoming Portugal’s youngest scorer at the tournament. Still only 18, he’s a serious prospect.
