Northumbria University poach top academic from Newcastle rivals

The head of one of the region’s university schools has been poached by a rival across the city. Professor John Wilson, currently director of Newcastle University Business School , has been appointed to the role of pro vice-chancellor for the faculty of business and law at Northumbria University . Prof Wilson has been at Newcastle University since 2012 and his appointment will be seen as a coup for Northumbria, with the universities competing for students in what is one of the more lucrative areas for higher education. In his time at Newcastle University, Prof Wilson saw its business school become ‘triple accredited’ by some of the world’s main business education bodies and oversaw a big growth in the number of international students coming to study on Tyneside. But the business department at Northumbria also has a growing reputation and was named Business School of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards last year, while Northumbria’s law school is the largest in the region.
